My pool has gone green what do I do?

Cause 1: Algae (microscopic organisms that if present in enough concentration will colour the water green)

Remedy: Adjust the pH level of your pool water. Then shock treat with chlorine and repeat if necessary

Cause 2: Chlorine Lock - excessive use of cyanurate based chemicals can cause chlorine to become ineffective at a cyanurate level of 150 PPM.

Remedy: Reduce cyanurate level to around 65 PPM by dumping portion of pool water than revert to normal chlorination.

My pool has a strong odour and swimmers complain of red eyes. What is causing this?

Cause: Insufficient chlorine. Surprisingly the cause is not "too much chlorine" as many people think rather a lack of free available chlorine. This is what happens, As the available chorine in the pool water does its sanitising job it mixes with other chemicals (ammonia type). The chlorine combines with these chemicals to form compounds called chloramines. Most chloramines are formed by chlorine reacting with ammonia, urine and perspiration. It is these chloramines and not "too much chlorine", that may cause the symptoms mentioned.

Remedy: Shock treat with chlorine.

My pool is cloudy and lacks sparkle, how do I make it clearer?

Cause 1: Early algae growth.(Algae not yet in sufficient numbers to colour the water)

Remedy: Shock treat with chlorine

Cause 2: Poor filtration

Remedy: Check filter operation. Filter may be dirty or worn out, valves may not be set appropriately

Cause 3: High pH

Remedy: Adjust pH with pH minus (sodium bisulphate) or hydrochloric acid
